The Brushy Mountain Shag Club (BMSC) is the premier Carolina Shag Dance Club in Wilkes County, N.C. The club is devoted to promoting and perpetuating Carolina Shag--The Dance of the South. With nearly 100 members (and still growing), The Brushy Mountain Shag Club holds
monthly dances, teaches weekly
Shag lessons, and performs occasional exhibitions in Shag dancing.
The BMSC began in August of 2003 when a small group of Wilkes County shaggers voted to start the areas first Shag club. Shortly after, a slate of officers was elected, a charter was approved, and the officers submitted an application to the Association of Carolina Shag Clubs (ACSC).
The group initiated a charter membership drive and over 100 members joined in the clubs first year. Joe Samuel served as charter President for two and a half years. Gary Doran served as president for two years. Tim Hauser is serving as President in 2008.
The BMSC hosts 14 dances per year at the North Wilkesboro Elks Lodge. Dance from 8pm -11pm. Dinner is available before every dance from 5:30pm - 8:30pm. Call ahead and order your meals and they'll be waiting for you when you arrive. Call the N.W. Elks Lodge dinning room at 336 838-8593. Our dances offer a large smoke free dance area with smoking permitted at the cash bar. No brown bagging is permitted.
In October of 2005, over 40 members and DJ Gene Hensley took our first 6-day Shag cruise to the Eastern Caribbean. Members attend several different in-state and out-of-state weekend dances throughout the year.
Members include residents of Boone, Hickory, North Wilkesboro, Sparta, Statesville and Wilkesboro. The BMSC is a member club of the Association of Carolina Shag Clubs (ACSC), which includes over 100 non-profit, local shag clubs located across the eastern seaboard.
The BMSC has brought the beach to the mountains.
